Huawei has introduced the MateBook Fold, its first foldable laptop and the inaugural PC to run HarmonyOS 5, marking a significant shift from reliance on U.S. technologies. This device features an 18-inch OLED display that folds into a 13-inch screen with a digital keyboard, offering a slim profile of 7.3mm when open and 14.9mm when closed. Weighing 1.16kg, it boasts a 3.3K resolution and up to 1600 nits brightness. The MateBook Fold comes equipped with up to 32GB RAM and 2TB storage, prices start at 23,999 yuan (~S$4,306), and is currently available only in China.

HarmonyOS 5, powering the MateBook Fold, is Huawei’s proprietary operating system developed in response to U.S. sanctions that restricted access to Windows and Android. This OS is built on a microkernel architecture, eliminating Android code and supporting only native HarmonyOS applications. It represents Huawei’s effort to create an independent software ecosystem across its devices.

The MateBook Fold’s launch signifies Huawei’s strategic move to establish a self-reliant tech infrastructure, challenging established players like Microsoft and Apple in the PC market. With HarmonyOS now extending to PCs, Huawei aims to offer a cohesive user experience across its product lineup.
