Nintendo Switch 2 Blasts Past 3.5 Million Sales in Opening Weekend

Nintendo’s highly anticipated new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, has made an explosive debut, selling over 3.5 million units worldwide within its first four days on the market since its launch on June 5, 2025. This remarkable achievement marks the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within a comparable timeframe, solidifying its position as the company’s fastest-selling gaming device to date.

The initial sales figures include various configurations, notably the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Set, which bundles the new system with a digital version of the popular racing game. This strong launch is a significant leap compared to its predecessor, the original Nintendo Switch, which sold 2.7 million units within its first month back in 2017.

The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces several enhancements, including a larger screen, higher resolution display, and innovative magnetic Joy-Cons equipped with mouse functionality. Mario Kart World has emerged as a key first-party launch title, contributing significantly to the console’s early success.

Looking ahead, Nintendo has set ambitious targets, forecasting hardware sales of 15 million units and software sales of 45 million by March 2026. Industry analysts, such as Ampere Analysis, support these projections, anticipating that over 13 million players will acquire a Switch 2 by the end of 2025.

Doug Bowser, President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming fan enthusiasm, stating, “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go. We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”

Despite the stellar sales, the launch has not been without its challenges. Reports indicate demand has outstripped supply, leading to instances of shortages and prompting Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa to apologize to customers who were unable to secure a console through lotteries. In response, Nintendo is actively engaging with manufacturing partners to accelerate production and has collaborated with online marketplaces to discourage reselling at inflated prices. The console is primarily manufactured in China, and there are ongoing discussions regarding potential price adjustments due to tariff concerns.

The record-breaking launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is a promising indicator for the console’s future and for the broader gaming industry, reaffirming Nintendo’s enduring appeal in the global market.
